According to an article in the Dec. 6, 1996 Las Vegas SUN, "Bad
checks, domestic violence and bankruptcies are rising in Clay County (Missouri), and
officials are drawing a connection to riverboat casinos that have opened there in the past
two years."
"Clay County Prosecutor Michael Reardon said that in the past two years he has seen
about 200 more cases per year of bad checks, stealing, assaults, DWIs and
embezzlements."
"Janet Mark, a spokeswoman with
SafeHaven, said the domestic
violence agency is seeing increased violence. People come home from the boats upset
because theyve lost money and get into an abusive situation, she said."
