The New Mexico Coalition Against Gambling has been in existence since 1986, when a group of people from several churches who were worried about lottery legislation began to organize to oppose gambling expansion in New Mexico. The New Mexico Conference of Churches, the United Methodist Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), The Evangelical Lutherans in America, and the Southern Baptist Convention became the principle supporters, but there have been over 400 churches, businesses, labor unions, and public interest groups that have signed on to the coalition ads and have helped lobby the legislature. The Coalition has been active in lobbying the legislature, has been involved in fighting gambling bills on the ballot, has taken several gambling acts to state and federal court, and was involved in a referendum to throw out the gambling enabling legislation.  We have been undiscriminating in fighting any gambling expansion: We have fought the Indian Casinos, the lottery, slots at the race-tracks, fraternal and veteran's organizations.
